Transform Your Space with Unique, Handcrafted Stone Sculptures
Artist's Statment
Each of my pieces begins as an idea. The ideas that fascinate me the most are those that test or contrast the natural properties of my chosen medium - stone. These ideas usually start as something simple like bending stone, making it levitate, move or melt. I then spend countless hours designing sculptures that capture the essence of my ideas while incorporating memories or personal experiences into each one.
The next step in my journey is where I actually begin to look for and find a stone suitable for my designs. Now, I don't have any metaphysical capabilities that let stones speak to me; rather, through a careful and diligent search, I find stones that are ideal for each sculpture. Through skill and passion, I then take raw boulders and turn them into unique sculptures that resonate with my soul and eternally embody one of my memories.
Biography
A love of labour - it's the only way to sum up this journey. George is a self taught artist. George's journey in the world of art is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. From a young age, his fascination with stone was ignited by his father, who taught him how to split field stones. Little did he know that this initial spark would evolve into a blazing passion that would shape his life.
At the age of 15, George embarked on his first job working with stone as a landscaper, crafting stone driveways and walkways. It was here that he was captivated by the sheer artistry displayed by his coworkers as they skillfully cut and chizelled stone into exquisite shapes. This is where his fascination with making stone curved or bent began.
Through countless hours of dedication and hard work, George honed his craft during his teenage years and into his twenties. He meticulously constructed stone walkways, patios, walls, and decks, steadily pushing the boundaries of his creativity.. These experiences set the foundation for George to teach himself how to carve stone and create the sculptures he makes today.
George's unwavering commitment to his craft not only fueled his artistic pursuits but also paved the way for his educational aspirations. The countless hours spent building and carving stones funded his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and his Juris Doctor.
With every sculpture, George's aim is to provide a glimpse into his mind and imagination. Each of George’s sculptures begin as a vision. After he has a clear vision, he uses a variety of power tools and hand tools to, to paraphrase Michelangelo, remove the superfluous material.
